SUMMARY OF THE PLAY
Stepan Stepanovitch Chubukov is a landowner . His daughter Natalya Stepanovna is a good looking girl . Their neighbour Ivan Vassilevitch Lomoy is a very suspicious landowner . Lomov ! comes to the country house of Chubukov with a proposal to marry Natalya . He is well - dressed . At first Chubukov expresses a suspicion over his arrival . However , he accepts Lomov ' s proposal joyfully and assures Lomoy that , as his daughter is love - sick , she will gladly accept the proposal . The old man gladly goes to bring Natalya . Natalya comes in , though she does not know anything of the proposal . Lomov suffers from palpitations . He is excitable and getting awfully upset . He gets involved in an argument with Natalya about the Oxen Meadows . It is a disputed plot of land between the families of Lomov and Natalya . At present Lomov claims it as the property of his family , whereas Natalya too demands the same tobe her own . A fiercequarrel starts between them over the question of the possession of the meadows . As a result , Lomoys plapitation of heart goes up and his legs are quite numb . When they shout at eachother , Chubukov enters and joins the quarrel . He asks Lomov not to darken his door again .
When Lomoy is gone , Chubukov begins a criticize Lomov in daughter ' s presence for hie । proposal to marry her . Hearing it , Natalya is surprised , and asks her father to bring him back soon . She becomes hysterical . Chubukoy is irritated with his whimsical daughter . However , he calls Lomov back . Natalya begs pardon of Lomoy for their indecent behaviour . She wants to change the subject matter of discussion . They start talking of hunting . And while talking , they get into second round of argument over their family dogs , Guess and squeezer . Again Chubukov enters and joins the quarrel . And the situation turns out to be disgraceful like the former one . This excitement makes Lomoy exhausted , and he feels palpitation again as his heart cannot bear the exhaustion anymore . He faints . Natalya too gets nervous . She is afraid that Lomoy is dead . She becomes hysterical again . Chubukov gets frightened and wants a pistol , a knife to kill himself . At this time , Lomov regains his consciousness . Chubukov asks Lomov to get married and says that Natalya is willing . Lomoy and Natalya kiss each other and declare they are happy . Chubukov is glad as the load of his daughter is off his shoulder . He orders champagne .
