ANS . In Sonnet No . 18 , William Shakespeare pays a tribute to the beauty of his dear friend . He compares the beauty of his fair friend to the beauty of a golden summer day . Summer is the fleeting time of the year . During summer , rough winds shake buds from the trees . The sun shines brightly and sometimes goes behind the clouds . Finally the summer fades . Though every object of nature is subject to decay , the beauty of the poet ' s friend is always constant . Even time and death will be unable to fade the beauty of the fair friend as the poet has immortalised him in the lines of his poetry .

ANS . The eye of heaven means the sun . In Sonnet No . 18 , the 'eye of heaven is a metaphor . The poet uses this metaphor toexpress the beauty of sunrays in summer . The sun is very hot in summer and shines brightly . When it shines brightly , nature appears beautiful . But that brightness is even dimmed when it goes behind the clouds . That means the sun loses its brightness in course of natural changes , and nature itself cannot maintain the beauty of summer . Here the poet refers to the "eye of heaven ’ to indicate that , though the beauty of summer decreases , the beauty of his fair friend is everlasting .

* 18 নং সনেটটিতে ‘ স্বর্গের আঁখি ’ একটি উপমা । গ্রীষ্মকালে সূর্যরশ্মির সৌন্দর্য বােঝানাের জন্য কবি উপমাটি ব্যবহার করেছেন । গ্রীষ্মকালে সূর্য খুবই উত্তপ্ত হয় , আর উজ্জ্বলভাবে কিরণ দেয় । যখন সেটি উজ্জ্বলভাবে কিরণ দেয় তখন প্রকৃতিকে খুবই সুন্দর দেখায় । কিন্তু সেই উজ্জ্বলতাও স্তিমিত হয়ে যায় যখন সেটি মেঘের আড়ালে চলে যায় । এর অর্থ সূর্য প্রাকৃতিক নিয়মের ধারাপথে তার উজ্জ্বলতা হারায় । এবং প্রকৃতি নিজেও গ্রীমের সৌন্দর্য ধরে রাখতে পারে না । কবি এখানে স্বর্গের আঁখি ’ কথাটি উল্লেখ করে বােঝাতে চেয়েছেন যে , যদিও গ্রীষ্মের সৌন্দর্যের অবলুপ্তি ঘটে , কবির সুদর্শন বন্ধুর সৌন্দর্য চিরস্থায়ী । ]
