The poet says that the soldier is asleep in the beautiful small green valley . The valley is flooded with sunshine from top of the mountain . The soldier is sleeping resting his head on the pillow made of fern and stretching his body in the heavy undergrowth . He lies open - mouthed in the sun - soaked bed of nature . His feet are among the flowers . When he sleeps , he has a smile on his face which is innocent like an infants smile . The wounds indicate that the soldier is dead .

The poet asks Nature to stay him warm . But Nature will be unable to revive him as he is dead . The attitude of the poet here is to express the futility of warfare . And this attitude is expressed ironically in the title of the poem in a subtle manner . Hence the title is quite significant .
